Question:

- I am a teacher, teacher of Romanian language and literature, and I have problems with my students, whom I honestly consider as my children. So far no one has taken care of them and they are not interested in school, they are also with social problems, etc. I do not know what methods to apply to make them read, to put a hand on a book with great pleasure. I forgot to mention that I'm not the kind of teacher to terrorize them. We are very good friends, we communicate, but if I tell them to read something besides manual I speak alone. I can't say they haven't tried, but I read 50 pages and they get bored. I thought about doing an exhibition with them, choosing a writer together and so on. Yes, the idea came to them, but when I told them to read, to make crying together, computer programs I started talking alone. It is unfortunate for me that the school does not handle properly and they are good students, young people that society will lose if we don't do something. Thank you very much. Maybe you can give me some advice on what to do with them. I forgot to tell you that I have classes IX-XI, and high school and professional. Thank you in advance.

Answer:

The problem you set out in the message is one that targets most high school students today. This lack of pleasure or disinterest in reading in general, and not only for the extra recommended, is characteristic of the student of these times, a student passionate about music, the Internet, games and daily fun.

As you can imagine, a universally valid solution does not exist, but the key to such problems is to motivate students. At first, because the intrinsic motivation is almost non-existent, try to motivate them. The program you mentioned seems to be quite interesting, but you must always consider their interests.

I recommend that when you try to implement such a program, I will discuss the program with the students beforehand, negotiate it and adapt it to their new demands and requirements. Also because you say that some successes were recorded, ie they were able to read 50 pages, try to measure as much as possible what is read, share the reading material either between students or for periods of time .
Unpublished ways of illustration and in accordance with the students' interests of the content of the read material can be useful in this case. The staging of reading in the form of slides, interpretation, music, altered stories may interest high school students. An important aspect that can significantly influence their interest in reading is also the type of reading, so as far as possible recommend them for the beginning a material easier to read, with a story appropriate to their age and interests. To find out what they are interested in reading you can probe this through the class, asking them about the latest reading materials (either in the form of magazines). At the same time, a brief presentation of books, a presentation well constructed so as to encourage them to read further can be useful, their curiosity being a real asset to read. At the same time, in order to help you in this process, you can call on the psycho-pedagogical counselor / psychologist of the school, the experience of working with those students being useful in these cases.
Good luck!
