If the child has an ear infection, it is very important for the parents to take him to an ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Thus, the specialist doctor can determine if it is a bacterial or viral infection.

If it is a bacterial infection, the doctor will probably prescribe an antibiotic. In the case of a viral infection, the antibiotic cannot treat the infection.
The child may be given pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. It is very important not to take aspirin unless it is given as directed by the doctor.
To relieve pain, a warm bandage can be applied to the ear. The doctor may also recommend ear drops.
